Our Design Process

At any scale and for every special space, our site-responsive design objectives are carefully partnered with efficient, economical, and enduring solutions. These solutions are part of who we are, and a result of a time-tested design process.

1: Site Visit

Almost every project starts with a site visit. We meet and listen to the specific needs of each client, and look to learn what each site has to say. Our visit aims to gather information for making informed design decisions. Frequently our clearest inspiration arises from the unique natural, cultural and social elements observed in person, onsite.

2: Master Planning

Armed with the knowledge of opportunities and constraints on a site and the context, the master planning stage kicks off the process of physical design. We put pens and pencils to paper, developing multiple ideas for the overall organization and flow of a space. The site visit may have produced a list of desired components or amenities, and we reference this list to meet the needs of our client, and satisfy the requirements of a space.

3: Design Development

After developing a broad vision, we zoom in. In design development, we craft the intricate details and explore the connections between each unique one. Masses of trees and shrubs become a specific palette of plant species; patios, paths, play areas, and more take specific shape and type of materials. Design development turns a great idea into a thought-out, believable idea.

4: Construction Documentation

Construction documents communicate design specifics to the landscape contractor. This is when we define specific materials, refine hardscape layouts, work out edges, finalize plant selections, and make sure our plan conforms to best landscape practices and applicable state or local ordinances. As required by a given project, we then submit our plans to local planning agencies for plan check approval. Once everyone is satisfied, the plans, details, and specifications inform contractors during the construction process.

5: Construction Administration

Firma also provides construction administration services—reviewing the project site as needed to make sure that construction conforms to the specifications of our plan set, and providing approval on any special components. Firma’s role is always to assist our client in receiving the high quality landscape development called out by our construction documents and the project vision.
